WAR TABLE ASSIGNMENT: MY HOW THE TURNS TABLES


WHAT:
Recently, Fenris and Abby discovered a Venatori research detachment surveying a region northwest of Starkhaven. These Venatori seem to have been in search of a temple to the old god Zazikel where it's suspected another Gate may be located.

Rather than focus on beating them to the Gate, members of Forces and Project Sashamiri will instead seek out the survey group with the intent to capture Venatori researchers who may pressed for valuable information regarding the nature of the Gates and what Corypheus aims to accomplish with them. Depending on the results of the mission, characters may have a significant decision to make at its close.

HOW:
Players will be provided with a log which will include all the vital IC details. They'll also be provided with a rubric of goals they can accomplish (which you can preview and play around with HERE - this may be tweaked before it actually 'goes live').

This mission is purposefully designed as a catch-all space. Threading the aftermath, or the pre-planning, doing tenuously related interpersonal threads, and the camp raid action are all valid ways of tackling this.

We have a few ideas for IC setup depending on who and how many people sign up, so don't worry about things like your character being a nerd in a dangerous situation, getting stuck in an unwieldy sized group thread, or figuring out how to face down a whole camp of Venatori with a tiny group of characters.

WHO:
Forces Division and Project Sashamiri. If you want to get involved but aren't part of either, you can join Project Sashamiri at any time by adding your character's name to the project roster, or by indicating in your sign-up form and Ammy or I will do it for you.

WHEN:
OOCly, sign-ups for this close at midnight on Tuesday, 6/28. The log will go up on 7/1.

The timeframe to collect bonus points will end on 8/9. The report for this assignment must be filed no later than 8/16, a week after the point pool closes so you can decide as a group which goals you want to have accomplished.

Welcome to the team! Ellis will be traveling to a region Northwest of Starkhaven in search of the Venatori survey group with orders to capture a few knowledgeable nerds who can cough up info on the Gates.

As you may notice, the log writeup is very action-oriented. However, the bonus point pool is designed to be flexible and reward downtime threads as much as action adventure stuff. We encourage you to write whatever you feel like in relation to the mission be it griffon riding adventures, the tedious trip back, interrogations, or something else. Split up! Treat this like a mingle event log! Whatever! More power to you if y'all want to do an eight person group thread, but that couldn't be me.

  • ICly, one of the characters will be designated as the mission's leader by Flint and Julius. However, we don't particularly want to restrict your play so please A) decide amongst yourself who was picked to be the designated driver, and B) feel free to ICly disregard them for drama/the rule of cool/etc if you feel so inclined.
  • At the end of the bonus point collection period (8/16), you will all need to agree how you want to spend your points. If you want to spend these and unlock info as you go rather than being info dumped at the end, let us know by commenting here. Just be aware that once you unlock the info for something, you can't re-lock it even if it later turns out you could have min-max'ed your point spending more effectively.
  • If you successfully capture someone, characters will need to collectively decide how they're dealing with that person(s) in the long term. We've left this purposefully open-ended, so feel free to think laterally. Maybe you want a captive Venatori on hand for a prisoner exchange player plot in the future. Maybe you want to put their heads on spikes and parade them over the army lying in siege outside of Starkhaven to lower morale. The possibilities are endless, just make sure it's accounted for.

Captured Researchers & Stolen Notes
Between the two captured researchers and the confiscated notes, the mission party will learn the following:

  • Written notes and orders indicate that Laetoria Rosci, a Tevinter historian, find and use artifacts on behalf of Corypheus. When questioned, one of the captured researchers describes her as a weak mage from an Altus family who nonetheless has a terrific memory and has made herself indispensable. She's a bookworm type (GREAT legs, AWFUL temper) and rarely leaves Minrathous, but from both the written notes and the opinion of the captured researchers it's clear she's well known for her scathing reviews of their work so far.

  • While on the subject of their colleagues, one of the researchers will give up the name of Cedric Marquette, an Orlesian expert who used to teach at the University of Orlais some years ago but has since left and entered the artifact acquisition business. Him they have seen recently outside Tevinter; he actually came by to evaluate something they'd found, declared it worthless to the cause but monetarily valuable, and took it to sell elsewhere on the Venatori's behalf. The team will have just missed him by a few days.

  • A captured Venatori will confirm that Corypheus intends to open the Gates to access the Black City, still on his whole seize-the-throne-of-god thing, and use his power to restore the world to its proper order. These are the Gates referenced in the Chant of Light (and by the 'Herald' everyone met at the end of the dream futures): "And I looked up and saw / The seven gates of the Black City shatter, / And darkness cloaked both realms."

  • One of the Venatori researchers indicates that he or she doesn't believe in the Maker–they're members of Corypheus' Elder One cult and believe what he's taught them about the Golden City being empty when he saw it. They're a little smug and taunting about how this is a sign of the Maker's return, if the Maker is there, so Riftwatch should let them get on with it.

  • The Venatori/research notes acknowledge that whatever is beyond the Gates seems horrifically Blighted and quick to spread, and as a result a lot of people in Corypheus' own ranks had qualms about opening them. But he opened one in Tevinter and demonstrated a method for using the power within the Black City to keep the Blight contained in an area around an opened Gate. Corypheus has assured them that once they're all open, this same process can be amplified to cleanse the Black City entirely. Many who are privy to this operation believe this will also end Blights forever.

  • Opening the Gates requires blood sacrifices and artifacts. The researchers are cagey at first about what artifacts, but will ultimately confess that they don't really know the specifics of what's required because only those higher up know the full scope of what's needed. They aren't even sure whether there are specifics or if there are multiple objects that might fit the bill, because they've been told to collect anything they find that's in any way to do with the Old Gods. They know some of their friends are separately searching elven sites. Their understanding from the limited information they've been given is that Rosci and Marquette are currently looking for some kind of "foci" and artifacts related to Zazikel.

  • Once they get everything they can out of the two captured researchers, the team will need to decide how they handle their hostages. This is purposefully open-ended—kill them, deliver them to the Gallows dungeons, drop them off with the Exalted March, set them free, etc. The world is your oyster, just make sure you account for their fates (temporary or permanent) somehow in your report.

Steal some minor magical artifacts/objects
The team will be able to recover the following magical artifacts; these items must be surrendered to Riftwatch's collection (unless you're willing to spend the appropriate AC reward points on them so your character can hold on to them):

  • Finger Loupe - A plain metal ring. While not an impressive statement piece to wear on the hand, the ring magnifies anything viewed through it. Great for reading fine print.
  • Nighttime Companion - This worn stone statuette may have once depicted a strikingly beautiful figure, but the details of its features have gone soft and indistinct over the ages. When held, it warms to match the body temperature of whoever is holding it and retains that heat for 4-6 hours. An excellent bed warmer for winter nights.
  • Friendship Cup - A once-ornate cup, likely originally set with gems or fine inlays. While it's lost much of its beauty, the cup still functions as a poison detecting device. Any poisonous liquid poured into the cup turns the strange metal alloy of its interior blood red.
  • Shearing Shears - A heavily rusted pair of small scissors that somehow still cuts through seemingly anything that can be fit between its blades.

Destroy Venatori Equipment
  • Great job you did it

Liberate or capture laborers (whichever turns out to be appropriate)
  • Pick one and include it in your report; ICly, there could be a mix of folk who were killed/captured/liberated, but note which was the predominant result.

Welcome to the team! Richard will be traveling to a region Northwest of Starkhaven in search of the Venatori survey group with orders to capture a few knowledgeable nerds who can cough up info on the Gates.

The log for this is located HERE. As noted in the sign-ups, there is a list of possible goals the group can collectively accomplish based on the points you earn. The spreadsheet and instructions are HERE.

As you may notice, the log writeup is very action-oriented. However, the bonus point pool is designed to be flexible and reward downtime threads as much as action adventure stuff. We encourage you to write whatever you feel like in relation to the mission be it griffon riding adventures, the tedious trip back, interrogations, or something else. Split up! Treat this like a mingle event log! Whatever! More power to you if y'all want to do an eight person group thread, but that couldn't be me.
